Re: The Simpsons
I have actually often discussed this with friends who enjoy the simpsons, and have a simple point to make. First off, I love it. I love it now for different reasons than I used to though.
I loved the first 8ish seasons because it was a cartoon comedy, that dealt with real issues. Or at least, semi-real. It was a family with issues, like a cartoon version of Roseanne (for lack of a better comparison). Homer was the flawed, simple minded blue collar worker. Well meaning, with his familys interests at heart. The show took normal issues and put a satirical and funny spin on them.
Now, you take the latter half of the seasons, look at Homer. He went from bumbling and well meaning, to selfish/greedy/sub-human intelligence. The whole crayon in the brain thing etc. The show became funny in a more typical way, it was a lot more one liners, and sight gags compared to story driven/situational.
I don't think this is bad though, shows change. The show isn't what it once was but it's still good for a quick laugh.
/overthought the question.
