Shit, who cares. Well I guess that's a stupid question, considering the amount of meatheads with molson jersey's and canada capes honking 2 hours straight trying to give out some mandatory high fives before they hit the miller lite's.

The number of chochy assholes in molson hockey jerseys walking around downtown yelling/honking their car horns was fucking staggering, I shudder to think what Vancouver must have been like.

These seem more like a commentary on the kind of people who were carrying on and acting the fool after the game and one guy saying he doesn't watch sports than a denouncement of sports as not punk enough. Seriously, that shit was going on all night. It was like every chuckle head with a team Canada jersey and a Canadian flag thought that they scored the winning goal. For one night the entire nation was brought together through mindless cheering and nationalistic machismo. I guess that's not really punk, but I still don't get how that intrinsically ties into sports as a whole, or even just hockey. At the very least DOA having a hockey team should make hockey PFR.

Considering that I only moved here to get free health care, cheap education, and not have to live in America anymore, I cannot argue with this.

I don't think anybody said anything about sports not being punk. I like sports anyways. What I don't like is when sporting events that have no bearing on the real world take priority over actual human needs. The 6 billion spent on the olympics would have been way more than enough to clean up the down town east side by providing addiction counselling, job training, putting people in apartments, giving people food, etc. Every homeless person in BC could have a roof over their heads with that kind of money. But instead it was spent on bullshit gentrification, kicking people out of low income housing so olympic facilities that most of us will never get to use could be built, and further dehumanizing the homeless population, most of whom have severe mental health issues, by shipping them out of the city so that rich tourists don't have to see them. But hey, we won at hockey!
The olympics made me embarrassed to be Canadian and of the province I decided to call home. We're supposed to treat each other better than that.

Tax dollars did not pay to build GM Place. The Canucks Group, NHL, and NBA fit the bill. The players were mostly all trained and payed by the NHL and their own sponsers. Also GM Place has operated next to the downtown east side since 1995 and both fans and homeless have coexisted without major incident.

I fucking loved when all these kids were crying that we didn't get the olympics off from school and what was even funnier was seeing some middle aged lady on the news saying that Canada winning gold in hockey was " The greatest moment of my life" and she was balling her eyes out. lolololololol

that's kind of harsh. i'd take any reason to not have been in school for one. and besides, seriously? people love hockey, get over it. a lot of us love hardcore. should we harp on people for taking hardcore seriously and enjoying it? let's relax a little and let people enjoy things, even if we don't enjoy them. This shifted from "hockey is cool!" to "Olympics caused financial distress" and finally to "people who are super into sports are retards" or something. the first two are cool, cause hockey IS cool, as wells as the Olympic funding thing is shifty and wasn't dealt with well. however come on, really? lazy assholes? where did that come from. let people have fun and escape once and a while.

But feel free to address my point that the olympic hockey was of no debt to the tax payer, its venue did nothing to upset the homeless ,and the gold medal game was bar none the best game of hockey Ive ever been privy to witness. As a bonus the team I was rooting for won.

The olympic village will more than likely be sold as downtown housing units and easily recoup the costs. The Richmond Oval will be turned into a sports complex much to the beneifit of the community. The cost to move the homeless was roughly 2.50 per person. Actually while I was downtown I noticed that the homeless were still in almost the same capacity as anyother busy night downtown.

Some students had a problem that needed solving and it was solved and some students took advantage of a problem being solved, this is nothing new.

There's a several hundred page document on I think the UBC website (my economics teacher references it a lot, but she's boring as fuck, so I'm usually asleep) that they've researched whether this was a good choice or not, economically speaking. Sure, it's not an exact science, but if the people in the think tank, who've actually done the true research think it's likely a good idea, I'm siding with those odds.

SO, my problem with the Olympics wasn't exactly the same as Zach's. Sure, the economic side of the equation seemed fucked but economics have always seemed like a combination of prayer and black magic to me, so I didn't really understand the entire thing (I'm not even being sarcastic here, you start talking economics with me and my eyes get all glassy and I start daydreaming about unicorns). I'm an anti-nationalist; the Olympics are a big nationalistic jerk off fest. Ergo, I like the Olympics. As well, and this is something I only recently found out, apparently the land taken in Whistler for the Olympics was pretty much grabbed straight from the Native population without their consent. Good times.


BUT, this is all beside the point. What I was gonna say was this: think tanks tend to be incredibly biased organizations. Economic think tanks are almost 100% biased, and quite often in neo-liberal (that is economically liberal or what we would think of as conservative in the modern sense of the word) directions. I'm not saying that the study you referenced actually was this way, I'm simply saying that research can be skewed any damn way you like it, and so you have to make sure the source is a good one. This doesn't mean the data your speaking of is wrong...I'd just like to know the source, and where the money to conduct said research came from.


ALSO, "true" should never ever be attached to the word "research" as research will quite often reflect the bias of the researcher.
