believe it or not there are actually people out there to whom punk ethic actually means something and who see fests such as this one as being the lame bullshit that they are. then again i guess metal bands are used to being sponsored by lame corporations such as this, it just bums me out to see bands who claim to stand for something participating in these events. and it's not like MDF is really all that much better.Human-Demise wrote:errr punxreece wrote:i be rasin the issues.
but seriously, FUCK morbid angel(still <3) for not booking mdf and for booking this bullshit.
fuck scion and bands that take part in this bullshit, underground culture has no place in a marketing scheme.
whatever i'll continue listening to my awesome scion magrudergrind album, while you continue fighting the man.
seriously its music. who cares who's footing the bill.

Re: Scion Rock Fest
i honestly dont get why its a big deal if its a corporate thing, dont you think that it might be possible to go to this show see the odd scion logo every once in a while and at the end of it, not buy a scion.
can you honestly say you wouldnt enjoy it just because its a corporate thing. you honestly couldnt go, ignore any marketing that may or may not occur and enjoy bands playing and get a decent pay for once.
id rather these bands get some real money and play at an actually good sounding venue, instead of playing dozens bar shows and peoples basements and breaking up after a few years cause they're in debt .
sorry if i dont care for how many diy points i lose for that.

theres probably under 5 bands that could actually drag my ass to an ARENA show these days
but yea i dont really care that much about the sponsor thing. money is money, most of these guys im sure are still deadbeats and could use the cash.

Re: Scion Rock Fest
im not saying that i dont like house shows and the such just that with newer bands from far off places like wormrot would eventually lose interest and fall apart if everytime they played it was an in debt arduous journey that left them with less than when they started.
i say its probably more punk to go out there take some companies money just to do what you always do, then to stay at home cause its "wrong".

The one thing is yeah the bands will get paid more in some cases far more than they normally would but that means submitting to a money making marketing scheme and throwing artistic integrity for a few bucks.. What if this fest was done through say Shell/BP/Haliburton you wouldn't care???

Re: Scion Rock Fest
meh maybe integrity was a bit of an off word but they still do what punk bands shouldn't and that's work with huge companies to exploit punk ideals etc. for the sake of making a few extra bucks on tewrr

Dead Kennedys are not a band anymore and Against Me! was previously booked for the Vans Warp Tour.

Re: Scion Rock Fest
As far as festivals go mdf is legit.
ZERO corporate sponsorship, vegan friendly food, bands like dropdead who would be censored at scion, and it's in a reasonably sized room.
Grindcore records should not have a car logo on it.

Re: Scion Rock Fest
In my opinion, it is generally bad to get involved with corporations. It is very difficult to not compromise some aspect of how you want to conduct and represent your band when dealing with most large corporations. Or anyone willing to put money into your project with some expectation of getting some benefit of giving said money back, not just corporations.
But I do not believe it is as black and white as "all corporations bad, punk rock good". For me it seems cheesy to associate with a product like Scion cars, but at the same time I'm not aware of any overt evil actions related to the Scion company and I drive a car. So I can't really criticize the general product when I use one, and without knowledge of a malicious track record from Scion, I don't think I have the right to pass judgment on the bands participating in the Scion shows. Personally I'd rather participate in a show sponsored by Scion than the Fest in Florida, which is sponsored by Pabst beer. Yet many tout The Fest as being punk as fuck. It's always been a thorn for me that much of the punk rock world gives sponsorship from beer and cigarette companies a pass. I think you need to decide on a case by case basis which corporate involvement you can accept and what you can't, it isn't an absolute.
Also, I want to know how people feel about the idea of using corporate $$ to a positive use? Do the ends justify the means? For example, Henry Rollins did an ad for The Gap years ago. But he used the money from doing that to print a handful of new books from himself and other authors and get 2.13.61 rolling. Does the end justify the means? Ceremony played a Scion show, and are using the money they were payed to play some shows they normally would not be in a position to do so, including the upcoming Seattle show. Does that mean any of you will not attend the Ceremony show in Seattle because they participated in a Scion show previously?
