I never understood why people were like THEY R HARDCORE. They sound more like more polished power-violence (not a bad thing at all mind you imo). I am seriously surprised by some of the people that are into them...some girl on my FB friends list is big into Emmure AND Trash Talk. Makes zero sense to me.

So ive re read my posts and im gonna take this as an excuse to back out of this discussion. Im basically in the same boat. I had good points but they were essentially killed by my repeated insertion of my foot into my mouth. Not sure where my head is today. My apologies to everyone ive inadvertantly offended.

didn't really read through the thread, so i'm sure that everything i say has probably be touched upon but anyways...

1) i guess that's why it's called HARDcore. if you aren't going to a HARDcore show expecting something like this to happen, stay home and listen to la dispute on your imac while you update your blog. take a look at any old video of TSOL in the early 80s if you want to see a real scary hardcore show. this was probably a bunch of kids standing still during the fast parts, doing a bit of moshing during the telegraphed mosh parts and texting between songs.

2) trash talk is pretty bad and for the most part attracts the worst merch mosh mutants / internet hardcore kids around, so i'm not surprised pit beef happened and turned the show into a dick measuring contest.

3) at the end of the day if you are at a show, and you can't immediately figure out where to stand where there won't be any problems then you are a doofus.

I think the best example of bands stopping people from moshing would be Fugazi, who apparently would stop playing when people would mosh at certain shows? I think there's video footage of this somewhere.

misogyny and macho bullshit in hardcore, but then there's a level of misogyny and macho bullshit everywhere...so why is hardcore so different? ... Maybe this should be a "Fuck Humanity Manifesto" since everything she's talking about is a problem that the whole of humankind is dealing with and not in any way shape or form relegated to hardcore. Which is why people are getting upset, IMO.

I don't understand this. It's been mentioned a couple different ways by people in this thread.

Is the argument here that the misogyny in hardcore is mirrored in the world outside hardcore, so there's no point addressing it specifically to hc?

No, it has to be addressed in hc and everywhere else, I just think that it's unfair to single out hardcore as a scene of misogynistic jocks when every other scene has the same problems.

Example to illustrate my point: At Rain Fest this past May, there some shitty vibes. During bands like Harm's Way and Hammer Bros, there were a lot of big dudes just punching people in the head with no regard for females or anyone smaller than themselves. I personally felt alienated and I walked out during a few sets. However, during bands like Punch, Dangers, Owen Hart, and Mindset, and Black SS, there were tons of girls going off and nobody was moshing to hurt anyone. I saw no apparent misogyny there. Hence, the problem is not hardcore shows, the problem is misogyny.

Also, Willa made some good points. She writes a generalized, inflammatory article targeting hardcore shows specifically even though (as everyone knows) many hardcore bands are outspoken against prejudiced attitudes and many hardcore shows go down without misogynistic douchebags punching girls in the head. It's still a problem in pop punk, the bar scene, and everything else, so why target a scene that is very diverse and often very welcoming to all genders, races, etc.?

But seriously, NO SERIOUSLY GUYS... Trash Talk (or Gash Cock, as James has so eloquently referred to them as countless times around the apartment) had dumb kids moshing like assholes during their set?????? I CAN'T GET OVER THIS!!!!!!!

Holy fuck, how did I forget about "Gash Cock"? This thread would have been a perfect opportunity to bust that out!

Sorry Kyle but to me this implies that you agree with this a lot more than just few parts. So it's not really surprising that people were asking why you felt this way.
Also I definitely agree with Andrews point but I felt like the OP was implying that misogyny is worse in hardcore than other places, and in my experience is it's much better. And your right Andrew, that doesn't mean we shouldn't address it.
Also part of what really annoyed me about the original post was the fact that she place such a negative stereotype on everyone who likes to mosh. Just because someone may look tough in a mosh pit, and just because someone owns a lot of pairs of Nikes doesn't mean that they can't also be an intelligent, kind, well rounded person. Just because you see a mosh pit as mahco bullshit while your standing outside of it, doesn't mean that's how the people actually doing it see it.
