started over after doing the first dungeon.
trying a drow thief for sneakyness. bows are cool to use, bit clunky right now though. thieving is hard too, everyone is always lookin at me... look away so i can steal your treasures! you can manipulate objects and like, lift a cauldron and put it over someones head though so they cant see and then loot them. tough to do but you get away with it...

That's what I'm using too. This game is going to consume my life.

My advice is try to get into the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood as soon as you can, it'll make your life easier as a sneaky character.

Anyone bought a house yet or found a base to work from? I havn't and it's a constant pain hitting my carry capacity and then finding places to sell stuff/store stolen stuff.

46 hours in, level 22. female nord. specializing in light armor, one handed, enchanting, smithing. then also kind of in archery, sneak, lockpicking, speech, etc. I dual wield maces, though I am thinking of my next weapon tier set being dual swords. most perks I've thrown into one handed, with a bunch also in smithing and archery and sneak. usually use the thief stone unless I'm enchanting a big batch or smithing a lot.

highlights? the star of azura is awesome (the black version = reusable black soul gem = killing innocent people easy just to enchant stuff), I'm just in the process of smith upgrading and enchanting a new set of armor. I enchanted a smithing buff set which is pretty cool (8% improvement bonus * 4 pieces of armor = 32% improvement bonus beyond my already decent smithing skill).

I married another woman and we live in markarth. she makes me a meal every day. lydia is my follower but I'm getting really sick of her. I gave her this stupid forsworn helmet because it looks like bad hippie dreadlocks on her.

I've run into tons of bugs and done tons of quests.

when I hit lvl 20, enemies got really hard. probably because so many of my focuses aren't really combat related and I've basically totally neglected any magic. but my current gear is super old (mix of thieves guild and dark brotherhood armor) so my new set should fix this.

hmmm what else. don't clear dungeons before the related quests, that has ruined my chance of getting a house in riften. I have been exploring and messing around a lot. I like the skill and perk system. it's too bad quests don't inherently give you "xp" since I've done a lot of non-combat/non-skill quests. but I like doing them.

horses suck at climbing mountains.

I realize how ridiculous it is that I've been putting about 11 hours a day into it. back at work now though. dammit.

about thieving being hard - put about two perks into your sneak bonus and wear shoes with muffle and you'll be fine enough to steal basically anything you want. stay behind people. if you're more into sneak attacks in dungeons, it'll take way more than that.

I swore an oath to myself to not grab the game until December until after I had moved and settled. So around Sunday I cracked and bought it.

Gat damn the game is fun. Playing a Dark Elf mage with spec in conjuration and destruction dual casting, with some one handed blade action when I get in over my head. Fun game.

Tyler, how'd you buy a house, did you get offered the chance to buy one by a town jarl, or is it just a matter of finding the right person to buy from?

there are five houses you can buy. you can own more than one. most of them you buy from the jarl's steward of the related city, after doing a bunch of favours for the jarl. all have a bunch of upgrades you can get.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Houses

the whiterun one sucks because it's tiny and you can't upgrade it to have enchanting/alchemy labs.
the riften one is cool but I am stuck in a quest bug and can never get it now.
the windhelm one I actually initially bought, but some other bug made it so my enchanting and alchemy labs wouldn't appear. possibly because I didn't fully "investigate" the place during the quest you do in it, so there might be lingering quest objectives blocking where that stuff goes. anyway, it's a nice big place, but sort of dark and not -that- nice.
the solitude one is ridiculously expensive.

the markarth one has a nice view from the steps, is in a cool enough city, and it's pretty nice inside. note that you have to be at least lvl 20 to qualify for the second of the jarl's quests.

im going slow. i wasted a lot of time figuring out pick pocketing and being sneaky and then i had to spend like half an hour trying to kill these 2 hired goons that werent after me. that was fucking difficult since they rushed me and all i had was a bow. had to split them up and run around a lot it was ridiculous.

killed the first dragon. way easier than i thought...
gonna stop for the night

I put mine on 'master' difficulty because I'm a masochist. It took me like 3 hours to finish the first dungeon I came across, the one with necromancer's near the first lake you start at after the initial quest. Probably because I'm a drow using a steel dagger, robes, and mostly fire magic. Just plowing through potions to stay alive. I'm not really too much into quests just yet .. as in, haven't done any or even gone into civilization. Just wanderin' and killin'.

finally got my smithing to 100. surprisingly easy. I imagined an exponential skill requirement sort of system, but I just kept smithing stuff and it kept going up awesomely.

I'm lvl 27 at this point. I think it's appropriate to make some dragon scale enchanted armor at this point without feeling bad about it, right? the funny thing is that I'm going to have to really look for or mine some iron, I basically tapped the world out of it as far as I can tell. including jewelry, I'm going to have four pieces to enhance my 1h weapon skill, not sure about the other two.

it's crazy how easy money is to come by when you're higher level. all loot is worth more and gold drops are higher. even quests seem to be (sometimes) rewarding more and my portion of my wife's job is usually pretty decent.

This is how I started too, but with a High Elf. It's pretty fun, but I found that I could just dual fireball EVERYTHING and it got boring...

I think you'll find that it doesn't stay boring. ES games have always had super powerful magic to start, but then as you level up, you're forced to strategize more to account for creatures with increasing health/armor and your either lack of armor or lack of magic regen. or you know, you could always up the difficulty. for me, lvls. 20-24 were the most difficult.

I also didn't just get rid of it, so I guess if I get further in with my orc and I get bored again I can just switch back. I'm blazing through since I'd already done so much on my mage, but I guess I mostly focused on the college on Winterhold which I probably won't do again...
