Japanese Hardcore, anybody?

Post by trappedinside »

Any fans on here of the ultra-distorted, noisy hardcore Japan thrived in mostly during the 80s (albeit also in other decades)? This stuff seems to be gaining more and more of a cult following thanks to the internet but for good reason, ever since picking up a Confuse bootleg tape from Black Raven for a dollar probably over a year ago I've been totally hooked. Right now it's all about Gai for me, the Damaging Noise EP is just too perfect a summary of what I want to hear from hardcore punk. Also into Gauze, Bastard, Battle of Disarm, Lip Cream, Kuro... even Boris did a really cool album a couple years ago where they paid tribute to this style.

Slight Slappers and Muga .. also not what he's looking for. Nightmare were pretty fantastic the 3 or so time I saw them in Vancouver.

1) Kulara were an awesome Japanese hardcore band that aren't the style you're going for
2) Killie are also an awesome Japanese hardcore band... their only problem is that they seem to have a really bad attitude problem:

Bastard rule. Slight Slappers rule too even if they aren't "crasher crust" type shit, at this point in the thread i'll take it hahaha. Lots of good fast bands from Japan as well.

Other good Japanese fastcore/grind: Senseless Apocalypse (early noisecore shit and later more hardcore material are both killer), Fuck on the Beach (three Asian dudes playing really fast and screaming phrases like "WHERE DO YOU WORK" over and over again, how could you go wrong?), Unholy Grave (duh), Brain Death (put out one EP in '86, amazing straight ahead thrashcore), World (absolutely crazy noisecore, two vocalists and no guitar), Su19b (Crossed Out meets Corrupted? one of the sludgiest sounding bands i've ever heard in my life)

But yeah forget my narrow definition and discuss whatever form of Japanese punk you feel like.

DEATHSIDE (you and Ishya are now in Forward and they are great, especially live) Warhead, GISM, I'm sure I'm not going to spell this right but Keojinbo (the singers name is Margret Take and it sounds like she ate broken glass), Gas, Gai, Lip Cream, Systematic Death (I got to see them 3 times in 2 days!) Disclose,Paintbox, Gauze, Slang (they just played Chaos in Tejas but I didn't get to go this year), Poison(Arts),Crow (also played tejas this year), The Comes, S.O.B.,Crude, D.O.N. D.O.N., The Stalin, Outo, Ghoul, Conga Fury, Tomorrow, Gastunk, The Execute, Strong Crowd (more tough guy style),Kuro, Age (who is playing Varning this year), D.S.B........
