The house was small, and the sixty people shoved into the living room elbowed each other aside for space. Mattresses were pulled off beds and propped against windows, blankets were shoved in between them, anything to muffle the noise and keep the neighbours happy. A semi-circle formed for the bands, which were set up on the floor and in a corner, perfect for audience viewing. Alcohol was everywhere, quite a bit of it going down my throat. The first band up was White Ribs, a two piece from Nanaimo. This was something straight out of my early teenage years; chaotic off-tempo noise-rock, Orchid with attitude, Pg. 99 without the edge. Nanaimo isn’t known for coming up with particularly interesting bands, and so when something this amazing shows up, the kids come out and rage. In between songs, drunken hooligans screamed out suggestions, most positive but some not fit for any publication. Richard Chisholm, guitar player/vocalist extraordinaire, has a scream that is somewhat reminiscent of Guy Picciotto from Rites of Spring with a little bit of the hawk jet from He-Man thrown in for good measure. After their set, more alcohol was imbibed while Compound Terror set up. A grindcore three-piece with noise elements thrown in for good measure, CT are locals that don’t play nearly enough. Blast beats bashed brains while righteous riffs replaced reason. Mad thrashing was to be seen, metal claws were thrown up, people were punched in the face, and everyone had an excellent time indeed. After their all-too-short set, Toronto’s Creeper set up while the crowd polished off their six packs and pulled out the whiskey. The night was getting hectic for everyone, and it’s around this point my memory gets fuzzy. Creeper sound like Cursed meets Black Ships meets every other east coast Canadian hardcore outfit. Grungy, grimy, dirty and blasting they brought out all the stops and destroyed the room. If anyone had uttered the words “This night couldn’t get any better” they were instantly proven wrong. Halfway through their set, a small voice in my head said “You should do a stage dive off that couch.” A note to everyone who may be reading this: my brain is attempting to kill me. However, I survived, and Creeper continued to play despite my botched attempt at couch-defenestration. After the show, everyone quietly left, too thrashed out to possibly continue partying...there. A little bird informed me of quite a few after parties, but my old ass ended up at home by one a.m. Sometimes you gotta know when to quit.

Ha. Yeah, it was, but honestly, I really like reviews that end up being the reviewer doing his level best to appear cooler than the bands. Fuck it, I'm writing about them, not me.keith. wrote:yeah that about sums it up.righteous riffs replaced reason

The Martlet, UVic's newspaper. I thought about shopping it around, but reviews are a dime a dozen, and most newspapers aren't particularly interested in them. Oh well.

Recordings don't do justice to what they sound like live. From Nanaimo, these dudes were the ones trying to set up a show in Nanaimo on the 6th but couldn't do it.

BASE PLAYAZ IZ FER CHUMPZ
HOO NEEDZ EM!
We actually started with a bass player. He was tall, and had bright orange hair. We were all in high school together, and we were great friends, but we all listened to slightly different music (many overlaps) and couldn't decide what kind of music we all wanted to play, so we never formed a band despite all playing the right instruments. Then, one day, we went to see The Locust in Vancouver and our minds were fucking blown. Colin (bassplayer) and I were in the bandroom at school one day, and, inspired by our Locust experience, jammed out this song that was subsequently titled Gorilla Monsoon. Colin used to flail like a dying eel live. We still play all the songs we wrote with Colin, but changed em slightly because Richard's parts all used to be super high end. That bro now lives in Toronto, where he enjoys seeing Burning Love and Fucked Up live all the time. Bastard.
THE END.

Aww yeah, Rusty Fuck me all night long.
I'm not sure if I've ever had myself a copy o' that demo...how many songs are on it? I think it may be lost in the ether, Richard's old comp crapped out (likely the only place they exist digitally) and I don't know if we have any cd-r's kicking around. I'll take a look/ask Richard. We're planning on recording next weekend though!
