Movies I am watching....

Post by Hollow »

I love movies. I work in a movie store. I take a minimum of one film course a semester. This thread will be dedicated to movies I am watching/am going to watch, as well as a place to discuss said movies, or other movies. No judgements will be made. I love old black and white French movies, but am equally obsessed with Bad Boys II and The Last Boy Scout. Feel free to bring up any film (Ian, juts go ahead and start crafting your love sonnet to Rush Hour right now).

ANYWAY...

Recently I've been on an Asian cinema kick. Just re-watched Ichii the Killer, and have the Dead or Alive trilogy waiting to be purchased at my work. The most recent one I've watched is a pretty hilarious South Korean film called Attack the Gas Station! This movie is fantastic. Kinda reminds me of early-Tarentino, without as much gory violence (lots of fightng, though). Also stars Ji-Tae Yu, who some of you may remember as the villain of Oldboy (and if you don't remember that, go and watch that movie. It rules).

Horror is pretty much a mainstay of mine. Pontypool is an all Canadian made movie that is the most exciting horror film to come out in decades. Funny, original, twisted, and terrifying. It's directed by Bruce Macdonald, and there are two sequals already in the works. I'm incredibly stoked to watch them. Up next for horror is Dead Snow. I love zombies, I love watching Nazi's get murdered, so I'm pretty sure watching zombie Nazi's get capped is gonna rule.

Thirst is the new movie by Chan-Wook Park, the director of the aforementioned Oldboy. I've unfortunately only been able to see the first 45 minutes (Zach can attest that I have the weirdest movie watching habits of all time. I have to literally stop a movie every twenty or thirty minutes to go take a walk. ADD sucks), but those 45 minutes ruled. I'll be able to give a far more in depth review of the film later, but I'm feeling pretty confidant that this movie rocks.

I'm in the middle of watching Wild Strawberries by Ingmar Bergman, and so far it's amazing. Bergman is perhaps on of the most restrained directors in history, and this movie is no exception. The dynamic the main character Isak has with his daughter in law Marianne is heartbreaking and sweet at the same time. Really enjoying this. Also, just watched Bertolucci's The Conformist, which also rules and is inundated with hot Italian women and serious political subtext. I dig.

Re-watched The Dark Knight for something like the millionth time. Love it.

That's about it, for now. Up next is I Sell the Dead, a low budget zombie flick set in the nineteenth century and starring Ron Perlman; The Maiden Heist, which doesn't look great, but stars Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken, and William H. Macy, so I kind feel like I HAVE to watch it; and Funny People, about which I've heard mixed reviews.

Lemme know what movies you like. I'll either watch them and give an opinion, or if I've already watched it, just tell you what I think.

Have been considering Thirst. Almost wanted to pick it up the other day. Unlike you i am not a huge horror film dude.
HOWEVER for japanese movies i just cough downloaded cough Tokyo Sonata by Kiyoshi Kurosawa who does all those japanese horror films.. so will see I know it is more of a drama so hopefully its good!

INGMAR BERGMAN!! yes. love that stuff. I was going to start watching that Fanny and Alexander Miniseries he did the other day.. but didn't want to yet.. LONGGGG
Also Persona... fuck.. 7th Seal!
I still haven't seen Wild Strawberries.

Just watched Humpday the other day. It was actually pretty decent.

Other movies i have waiting for me:
Adoration by Atom Egoyan
Contempt by Jean-luc Godard
Days of Heaven (the only Terrance Malick film i have yet to see i am pretty sure. Badlands remains one of my favorite films of all time)
My Winnipeg by Guy Maddin
and Klute by Alan J. Pakula

i'm just hipster trash and i love anything wes anderson does. mainly rushmore though. definitely my favorite movie of all time.
and magnolia, they are tied. i love paul thomas anderson too.

umm this is my first semester in 4 years that i haven't had a film class, and i like it. i'm technically done the requirements for my minor but i think i'm going to find one to add for next semester. i miss it.

a friend lent me the searchers last week insisting that it is the best movie ever, but i haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

i love movies.

i think this was another reason we got along pretty well at the start. First you recognized my hardcore hoodie. Then you were into Wes Anderson and PTA.

Lately i think Punch Drunk Love is my fav PTA film passing magnolia (which just seems so long to get through sometimes)

PTA rules. I'm gonna be completely cliche, and say that Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood are my favorite movies he's done, although Magnolia is fantastic.

Troy, I have to watch Contempt for my film class. Do you have it/do you just wanna come over and watch it with me? Also, Days of Heaven is my favorite Malick film. To be fair, that and Badlands are the only two I've seen. Wild Strawberries is excellent, although I'm not finished with it yet (like I said, weird movie watching habits). Also, need to watch Seventh Seal, definitely going on my list.

I used to do movie nights at Olio Cooperative every other week or so. Would there be any interest in me starting that up again? If so, what movies would you guys want, and what day would be best for everyone? Depending on how many people say they're into it, we could easily do this at my place.

Pat, I hear ya. I've been getting so many 14 year old girls and 50 year old menopausal women coming in to rent the first one because that new piece of trash is out. It's getting harder to keep my mouth shut whenever someone rents one.

Who the fuck am I kidding? I always tell them that movie sucks.

I'm gonna be updating my staff pick section soon, I'll make sure to post it up when I'm done.

I have Contempt on my computer. I haven't seen any of Godard's films so i thought that would be a good place to start. but would be down to watch it with people. i dislike watching movies alone for the most part... kind of grown accustomed to having someone to watch them with

Willa, you spoke of such interesting sounding movies. I MUST CHECK EM.

I'm in a film 200 class right now. I have an essay due tomorrow worth 25% of my grade. It's 12:50 and I've barely started. I'm comparing Babel and Dr. Strangelove. They both fucking rule.

I wouldn't call it anywhere near the best film ever, but if you can get past that sort of hokey John Wayne All-American kind of vibe, it's still a really great movie.

My favourite movie is Mean Girls. It's probably the most hilarious work of satire I've ever seen.

Not my favourite, but I'd argue that Once Upon A Time In The West is the most beautiful movie ever made.
