VIHC FEST BAND CRITIQUES post yerz
Day 1
No Eulogy: Our set was ok!
White Ribs: Easily my favourite band from the island. As always, very innovative, and complex. Second vocals ftw!
Joyce Collingwood: Was not into this band whatsoever. Good musicians, but not my thing.
Putrid Brew: Very awesome. I think the singer posts here? You guys should play Troyler sometime! With Horizons!
Persistence of Time: For some reason I remember these guys sounding way different. Was alright. Sick bullet belt.
Still Fighting: Lead singer was nuts. Not bad.
Still Birth: Totally missed these guys because I was eating a samosa. Next tiem...
Substance: I guess they didn't play?
Blackwater: Really impressed by these guys even though I just caught the end of them. Very similar to PG.99 and stuff! Awesome!
Compound Terror: <3
Tempest: The best set I've seen these dudes play. Really really energetic. Awesome.
Horizons: Big highlight for me since I saw them ages ago with a different line-up. I'll definitely pick up the LP when it drops.
Cold Craving: Outstanding. Shame that more people weren't watching them.
Voices: Someone said they were like Have Heart. I still haven't heard Have Heart. Voices were pretty decent though.
AK47: Set was awesome, but lacked Bubba.
Ill Intent: I kept calling these guys Thrill Intent, because I thought they were thrilling.
Crucified: Pretty cool stuff.
Withdrawal: Another band that keeps getting better. Soooo rad. Only band I feel requires me to "fight dance", aside from Promises.
Donnybrook!: Pretty fun live. Fucking stomp jams hahaha.
Day 2
Victims Choice: Sucked that Minor Threat cover didn't go as planned. Still was fun. Best project from Mike/Shelby. Fuck you Reece.
Young Oppression: 16 year olds playing uninspired crust. Walked out.
Sabertooth: Was eating. Missed them
Fear of Tomorrow: I was going to ask why there weren't more crust bands on this years fest, but then I realized that GHPR was supposed to happen the same weekend. Would have been sweet if there were more bands like this.
Tongue Tied: Stoked on this, Hunter you are a gentle beast.
On Call Heroes: I dunno if a lot of people were into them, but they're the nicest mens around. They brought the smooth hits to the kidz.
Promises: TAMBO x 3000
Damages: So energetic live. I am more and more liking this band as they go on. Best bass tone!
Everyone Everywhere: I hadn't seen these guys live in awhile, but they were rad as last I remembered. Drummer ripped. I always get so confused when I see Drew sing. He's so fucking menacing looking, as if he would fucking punch your face out, but has a voice of an angel.
Make Do and Mend: Made do and made me like them. Neat band.
Slingshot: Was so fun. People went bananas!!!!
Shook Ones: Tighhhhhhhht. Will probably try to get into these guys more. EVERYONE seemed to know the lyrics. Didn't realize they were that big. Rad dudes.
Overall the fest was pree cool. Next year needs more crusty bands and more melodic hardcore/post-hardcore. I like the tuff guy stuff but it needs to get broken up a lot more. Also smaller venue(s), would make the sound for most of the bands better, and that's what is most important to me. Regardless I still had a smashing time. Kudos to Troy/Willa/Zach/Scott/Ebony/Pauly D

day one was by far my favourite, tough guy hardcore is my favourite hardcore, day two had some excellent bands that made up for my lack of love for pop, damages in particular killed.

Re: VIHC FEST BAND CRITIQUES post yerz
i guesss i will do mine
Day 1
No Eulogy: band full of dicks. did not enjoy. Actually nice set from you guys. Scott didn't seem comfortable on those rented drums.
White Ribs: good guys. sweet sounds all around.
Joyce Collingwood: meh not my thing.
Putrid Brew: i love lindsay. this band rules i will continue to jam the whole album.
Blackwater: once again working the door during their set. which sucks i was really stoked to have Jeremy up here again. the rest of the band were stand up dudes while staying at my place.
Stilbirth: working the door stood up to see portions of what sound like sweet shit.
Still Fighting: madball cover while i am working the door....
Compound Terror: i enjoyed the walls of noise.
Persistence of Time: once again i have nothing but love for everyone in this band. Sucks we were running behind and had to cut them short.
Tempest: cool to see them with 2 guitar players now. 2 weeks! till they are back.
Horizons: i think i was doing door again during horizons set.
Cold Craving: excited to come in and see these guys. fun set.
Voices: turns out one of the songs that was stuck in my head the last week was Voices. hmm
AK47: band sucked. bass player totally brought them down. she faced away from the crowd the whole time.
Ill Intent: I only caught a little bit of their set. Good dudes however. missed a Life of Agony cover. i was outside
Crucified: these cali dudes seemed cool as always (3rd time seeing them)
Withdrawal: withdrawal... new lineup seems cool.
Donnybrook!: hahahaha oh man. they didn't play check your chest.
Day 2
Victims Choice: they kept calling my name wtf?
Fear of Tomorrow: enjoyed some of their songs. massive headache started NOW.
Sabertooth: caught most of their set. headache is killing me. i have some water. its good.
Tongue Tied: barefoot mosh band.
On Call Heroes: as nick put it SMOOTH HITS. i legitimately like this band now mostly cause how much BETTER they are than in 2008. Country Girl is a sick summer jam.
Young Oppression: talked with danny outside. needed a break.
Promises: tambo, tambo, tambo, tambo. Oh yeah this band. my headache was back with a vengeance but i hung on till the cover then bailed to find tylenol or something.
Damages: Superb.
Everyone Everywhere: cool band. i noticed near the end he was talkign about how people outside shoudl be coming in. I thought it was a decent crowd compared to what OCH had. Members of other bands were watching them.
Make Do and Mend: LOVE THIS BAND. way better set than last time i saw them. stoked for the new split.
Slingshot: hey i know this band.
Shook Ones: SHOOKS! fuck yes. have loved this band everytime i have got to see them.

Here goes...
Day 1
No Eulogy: Everyone in that band is awesome... except Reece. Fuck you, Reece, for not covering Firestorm.
White Ribs: Amazing as per usual.
Joyce Collingwood: Was outside. Not my thing.
Putrid Brew: This was fun. Enjoyed it.
Blackwater: Stoked that Jeremy's back! Rest of the band rule too. Oh, and I guess their music's okay.
Stilbirth: This was fun.
Still Fighting: Was outside, getting food, heard the Madball cover, debated going inside, decided I didn't want to get hit in the face (by Jordan, or anyone else).
Compound Terror: Much better than the first time I saw 'em that's for sure. Scott, you're awesome.
Persistence of Time: Glad I finally go to see these dudes play. Was fun.
Tempest: two guitar players, what? Sounds good. I liked it.
Horizons: I draw a blank.
Cold Craving: I liked them; was pleasantly surprised. Everyone else I talked to after their set didn't seem to enjoy it so much though.
Voices: So stoked on Voices. Always stoked on Voices.
AK47: Was outside for most of it. Amazing, but not my thing. Sorry Jodi.
Ill Intent: This was fun.
Crucified: I am wearing their shirt.
Withdrawal: I have their shirt in my backpack beside me. They rule just as much as the first time I saw 'em at the Troyler.
Donnybrook!: Ouch.
Day 2
Victims Choice: Reece sucks.
Fear of Tomorrow: This was fun.
Sabertooth: I have their pin on my hat. I liked them.
Tongue Tied: Cool seeing Hunter with a microphone. Into it. Into the cover too.
On Call Heroes: Was outside. Seen them one too many times, but they've gotten considerably better in the past year or two.
Young Oppression: Dicks.
Promises: Tambo, Tambo, Tambo, Tambo. "I thought you guys were saying techno..." Tambo should change his name to Techno.
Everyone Everywhere: Will always love this band. More people should have watched this band. Also, they played Left Behind. WOOOO!
Make Do and Mend: LOVE THIS BAND. That is all.
Slingshot: Super tired... want to jump in there... super tired... I'll just stand out here.
Shook Ones: So good. Wasn't really sure what to expect and it sucks how their set was cut short, but they were awesome.

Re: VIHC FEST BAND CRITIQUES post yerz
I am SO glad that Sabertooth made it finally, I reallyyyy wanted to see them.
Donnybrook was my biggest highlight, obviously. No need to even go on about that. I am just super happy about everybody that played this year!!
Ummmmm Madball cover!!?!?!?!? IT WAS RAD. The singer of Still Fighting asked me to pee in his mouth, a few times.

Day 1
No Eulogy: I'm happy with how we played despite what Reece says.
White Ribs: They don't really play music that I "get" per se, but are always really enjoyable live. Diggin' the second vocals.
Joyce Collingwood: Sweet tunes, but I found it kind of passive aggressive when they kept saying "do kids dance in Victoria?" So what if nobodys dancing? Maybe they just wanted to enjoy the tunes.
Putrid Brew: Sweet tunes, would like to see again.
Persistence of Time: A great time as per usual
Still Fighting: Awesome.
Still Birth: What I saw I liked, but I didn't see their whole set.
Blackwater: I missed most of their set and that bums me out.
Compound Terror: They'd be better if they had blast beats.
Tempest: HOLY SHIT HIGHLIGHT OF THE FEST.
Horizons: Not really my steeze and I think I was outside for most of their set.
Cold Craving: I saw a couple of their songs and liked what I heard but my hunger got the better of me and missed most of it.
Voices: Sounded alright, by this time I was pretty tired and cranky because it was past my nap time so I couldn't really give them a fair assessment.
AK47: I think it goes with out saying how awesome they were.
Ill Intent: 'MERICA: THE BAND. FUCK YEAH!
Crucified: Awesome set. Pat Mosh FTW!
Withdrawal: If this is the procuct of living in Winnipeg then maybe we should all move there.
Donnybrook!: Super fun set, really sweet dudes.
Day 2
Victims Choice: Awesome until the end when some asshole dropped the ball on pressures on.
Young Oppression: Fuck off.
Sabertooth: Lots of fun, I wouldn't mind hearing them recorded.
Fear of Tomorrow: Raaaaaaaged.
Tongue Tied: I missed most of their set and that makes me sad. Hook me up with a demo plz.
On Call Heroes: Missed them. I was attending to other business.
Promises: BEST HARDCORE BAND IN VICTORIA!
Damages: Remember what it was like the first time you got laid? Not the awkward and traumatizing parts but the "holy shit my dick is inside of a vagina and it feels awesome!" part? That's what seeing Damages is like for me every time I see them.
Everyone Everywhere: I would have liked it more if they weren't complaining about people outside during their set, but I still liked them.
Make Do And Mend: I was attending to other business, which is to bad because I hadn't heard them before and the members that I met were really swell guys and I really wanted to see them.
Slingshot: Missed most of their set. Major bummer.
Shook Ones: Awesome steeze, wish they could have played longer but such is life.
Out of the 3 fests I've had the pleasure of attending this one was by far the best. It was an absolute privilege to be a part of it. Huge thanks to Pauly, Scott, Willa, Troy, and Ebony for letting me be a part of organizing this years fest and probably doing waaaaaay more work than me for it. Huge thanks to everybody that's a part of VIHC for making me feel so fucking proud to be a part of this community.

Haha, I'd like to know what you think the answer to this is. Apparently it was 'sexual jokes regarding ebony' weekend, did you see the concession sign that was added on Sunday? Somebody came up to me and asked me when they were getting their free blow job. Thanks guys, Im getting you back for that when you least expect it.ZACH ATTACK wrote:...So did you?ebony wrote:The singer of Still Fighting asked me to pee in his mouth, a few times.

In all seriousness, I had nothing to do with that sign. I fear your wrath. Please spare me from your swift and most righteous vengeance.

Re: VIHC FEST BAND CRITIQUES post yerz
ok so i guess ill go through the list.
also im gonna try it in the order the bands actually played in
DAY ONE
no eulogy: seen them dozens of times now, solid set, sound was off though, could have been better, but was still really good.
white ribs: the locust with out the wussy keyboard, equals awesome.
joyce collingwood: i liked it, i gave em a bunch of money cause their patches were diy as fuck, reece really liked em.
putrid brew: the beginning of the wave of tough guy hardcore, awesome!
and then my memory becomes really hazy as to who played when, so im gonna order them how every i feel like it.
still birth: people keep confusing them with the other still band cause they played in the reverse order on the list, vocalist had a crazy warhero shirt, "get stupid" is the best stage banter ive ever heard, killer stuff.
still fighting: vocalist has a terrible voice but command your attention, and was bleeding profusely, also girl bass player, there needs to be more women in tough -person hardcore, also awesome.
persistence of time: vocalist was missing teeth, crust as fuck, more moshy hardcore, awesome.
compound terror: THE BEST.
then a bunch of more post rock influenced hardcore bands played. one of them played a tom waits cover i wish i knew what band it was.
tempest: good stuff, record was super cheap, didnt like when he crashed in to me but it got better, (did they do the buffy the vampire slayer cover?)
voices: apparently the did the tom waits cover, not my thing, but the cover made me smile.
cold craving:not my thing but very talented.
black water: this was really good my memory is hazy but i know i liked it, i think they had blasts.
more tough guy stuff.
horizons: at this point its difficult for me to remember which band was which, this was the band with the vocalist with the sweet moustache. good stuff
ill intent:also really good, vocalist was a lanky guy in a cro mags shirt, vocal pitch was higher then most hardcore bands, i really liked that.
crucified: hazy memory, still really good.
withdrawal: more mosh then i remember, awesome.
also ak47 played i cant remember when, but
ak47: ALSO THE BEST
and
donnybrook!: hard as fuck, rob said it best when hes saw the vocalist "be careful around him, he may engage you in fisticuffs"
DAY TWO
pre show bbq:
falling down: they were very bubble gum pop, reece was right though they have a song with a blast beat. giles the vocalist was in one of the tough guy bands but i cant remember which.
victims choice: pretty good, threw some stuff at reece though.
sabertooth. not really my thing, but you guys like em.
tongue tied: not really my thing.
fear of tomorrow: made me wonder why there wasnt more d-beat crust this year, pretty good, nice dudes.
on call heros: every bodies been pretty nice about not saying it but i will, they were awfull, and I feel bad about that cause my friend is in that band and hes a real nice guy.
young oppression: is why there isnt more d-beat crust bands playing this thing, shitty people playing shitty music, wanted to punch the vocalist for having such an ego about playing, dont let them come back.
promises: so good, best set ive seen them play.
damages: the best of day two, absolutely perfect.
everyone everywhere: sat at a table, got drowsy, fell asleep, troy slapped the table, woke up, they finished playing.
make do and mend: not my thing, but you guys like em.
slingshot: not my thing.
shook ones:they were all right, guitar player played at maryland death fest knows entombed, thats cool.
in conclusion: day one was more fun for me, day two had some good parts though, also if ant bodies interested i can set you straight as to which "still" band is which, and AWESOME WEEKEND
also im gonna try it in the order the bands actually played in
DAY ONE
no eulogy: seen them dozens of times now, solid set, sound was off though, could have been better, but was still really good.
white ribs: the locust with out the wussy keyboard, equals awesome.
joyce collingwood: i liked it, i gave em a bunch of money cause their patches were diy as fuck, reece really liked em.
putrid brew: the beginning of the wave of tough guy hardcore, awesome!
and then my memory becomes really hazy as to who played when, so im gonna order them how every i feel like it.
still birth: people keep confusing them with the other still band cause they played in the reverse order on the list, vocalist had a crazy warhero shirt, "get stupid" is the best stage banter ive ever heard, killer stuff.
still fighting: vocalist has a terrible voice but command your attention, and was bleeding profusely, also girl bass player, there needs to be more women in tough -person hardcore, also awesome.
persistence of time: vocalist was missing teeth, crust as fuck, more moshy hardcore, awesome.
compound terror: THE BEST.
then a bunch of more post rock influenced hardcore bands played. one of them played a tom waits cover i wish i knew what band it was.
tempest: good stuff, record was super cheap, didnt like when he crashed in to me but it got better, (did they do the buffy the vampire slayer cover?)
voices: apparently the did the tom waits cover, not my thing, but the cover made me smile.
cold craving:not my thing but very talented.
black water: this was really good my memory is hazy but i know i liked it, i think they had blasts.
more tough guy stuff.

Re: VIHC FEST BAND CRITIQUES post yerz
The actual reason is because it was the same weekend as GHPR fest. But uh, yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about them coming back.Human-Demise wrote: young oppression: is why there isnt more d-beat crust bands playing this thing, shitty people playing shitty music, wanted to punch the vocalist for having such an ego about playing, dont let them come back.
