But he even said it wasn't him who wrote it, he just said he agreed with parts of it. Kyle wasn't saying those things in that blog post, some other person was, and he just said "I agree with parts of this, this would be interesting to discuss", or at least that was his intention. In that case, there's really no reason for anyone to call him out going "You're frontin' on my scene, bro!"

Fuck missed that. Sorry Kyle.

I don't see how this is a inflammatory post? I guess it's too much of a stretch to ask people to look at someone's point of view and critique it. I guess it's easier to, as darcy said, react in a knee-jerk fashion. Yes, she said some things that people might be offended by, but obviously they were blanket statements, and if you take offense to them you're not getting the point. Also, I feel this reply to me is WAAAAY more over the top then me saying 'don't get your panties in a knot' to Pauly. If this was someone's post about how much hardcore ruled, would people be so reactionary to it? Also, "you thought that we would agree with you?" What does that even mean? I didn't ask anyone to agree and I didn't say anything for people to agree with ME. Also, maybe I should clear this up by saying "The Fuck Hardcore Shows Manifesto" was her title. Maybe that's why people think I am on her side?

On a separate note, I have seen dudes that fit this description at every hardcore fest I've been to and they're always from out of town. However, I never thought VIHC was like this. I like you guys.

This actually does clear a lot up, thanks. Two things though:

One, I think that people have been critiquing her point of view. They're critiquing her use of vast generalizations and pointing out how wrong they think she is. That's a critique. It may not be the critique you want or like, but it's the critique you're getting.

Two, Pauly kind of had a point a little earlier: other than VIHC Fest, where have you encountered people like this? I came from a scene in Phoenix where people were straight up getting beaten at every show, where people were carrying guns (one of which was actually pointed at me once), and where I legitimately feared for my life on a regular basis. You grew up in Victoria. I'm by no means saying your experience isn't valid, or that you don't have a point when you say that there's a level of misogyny and macho bullshit in hardcore, but then there's a level of misogyny and macho bullshit everywhere...so why is hardcore so different? I've been to a lot of shows outside of hardcore. That ramp show during Rifflandia? Sausage fest until Open Relationship played, when every girl in the vicinity was out there, and then back to the sausage fest (I had a great time during that show, though. Probably because I was a dude). Maybe this should be a "Fuck Humanity Manifesto" since everything she's talking about is a problem that the whole of humankind is dealing with and not in any way shape or form relegated to hardcore. Which is why people are getting upset, IMO.

oh I agree Andrew. it just seemed as though Kyle used this example, [without explaining what exactly he could relate to within it] to explain his lack of interest in the hardcore scene.

and Kyle - i wasn't calling you out, or slamming you - i was just trying to understand what issues you may have with shows in town. we've spoken, and like i said, it just seemed to me as though it was the music, first and foremost, that discouraged you from the scene; to me it just seemed like hardcore wasn't your bag and that's completely ok, i suppose i was just confused by the bloggers complaints in relation to VIHC and how you see correlation between the two, because i do not.

completely unrelated, im quite into Trash Talk [new album included], i don't necessarily get the "hype band" tagline, hyped by who? where? i saw them last month and i was quite impressed.

I don't understand this. It's been mentioned a couple different ways by people in this thread.

Is the argument here that the misogyny in hardcore is mirrored in the world outside hardcore, so there's no point addressing it specifically to hc?

I'm not critiquing hardcore, I''m not critiquing VIHC, I'm not critiquing anything, I just thought it was an interesting piece. I may agree with certain points, but that should not reflect a personal attack. This was written by someone I don't know. These are not my words. If I wanted to critique hardcore, I would write it myself. I'm not trying to. I simply thought it was worth reading and would be a good discussion, not a personal attack flail show. I realise it's loaded and has the potential to make people mad, but like she said, as long as you know why it makes you mad, that's good.

Willa, the "you're not hard, I'm hard" argument is weak. "where have you encountered people like this?" says you. Apparently you know me and all of my experiences. That's wonderful. I guess I didn't tour and play hardcore shows across Canada or go to them in Kelowna and Vancouver on roadtrips. I may not have been to them in the 'dangerous' American venues, but I'd like to think I have a pretty good concept of what happens at a hardcore show. I don't need a gun pointed in my face to know tough guy machismo is a big part of hardcore. Also, they have this thing called the internet where you can watch videos and read articles about hardcore shows and bands. I'm still waiting on that in my village, but soon I will have the magical powers of the internets! :) Also, what does the ramp show have to do with this?

I guess I might as well get involved in this discussion, rather than merely defend why i posted this. you said, "but then there's a level of misogyny and macho bullshit everywhere...so why is hardcore so different?" I don't really understand what you're getting at. I don't like misogyny or macho bullshit and if I can help it, I will not surround myself with it. Just because it's elsewhere doesn't mean it's acceptable in hardcore.

I'll also admit that, though it doesn't happen much anymore, I've definitely 'gone off' at shows and done 'macho bullshit'. I've probably hurt people that didn't need to get hurt. I'll admit, it's fun to go crazy at shows, but snorting drugs is fun too. I don't think snorting drugs is 'good' for me. Because something is fun, does not mean it's morally acceptable. I'm not equating drug use with having fun at a show, I'm just making a point. Maybe behind all of this fun and venting frustration and anger, there lies something deeper and darker and maybe it's not necessarily good. You're right, there is no black and white in this, and I think that's where the person that wrote this fails. It's way too gray. And the blanket statements and over generalizations weaken what could be a decent argument. I still don't think it's anything to get mad about.

Also, I actually like Trash Talk.

And for Pauly, honestly I do not have issues with shows in town. Seriously. This is not an attack on VIHC. What you guys do is great, I'm not slagging you.

If this was a 'Fuck Hipster Shows Manifesto' I'm sure everyone would be laughing.

I actually didn't do this. I never said this why I'm uninterested in the hardcore scene or that this is an example of why. I said I agree with points and it sums up things I've had an issue with in hardcore since I first started listening to it(general term), eg. tough guy posturing, misogyny, tough guy posturing.

KYLESTYLE wrote:this was posted on someone's tumblr as a personal rant by said female. It's interesting and points out exactly what I don't understand about the hardcore community since day one. Obviously people will disagree with it, but it's worth a read:
I interpreted that as you agreed with everything in the article, not just a few points here and there... my mistake i guess.

i understand the argument, and even agree, to an extent, that this may be a problem in hardcore, in alot of scenes. seeing as how on this forum, and when its concerning the people involved in this scene, i just took the standpoint that you felt this was a predominant problem within the VIHC scene and why you are alienated...again, my mistake

im not saying macho bullshit isnt a problem within hardcore, it certainly is - but like any other event where numerous people are crammed in a room together, all with different values and ideologies, it is hard to esacape [and i feel that the machismo factor doesn't reveal itself moreso in hardcore than in any other genre of music]

i guess what i was trying to discuss, was is this really a problem within our community? no i dont think so.

am i going to base my opinion of "hardcore" on what some jack off's in chicago are doing at a trash talk show? probably not

is this "machismo" attitude more prevalent within hardcore as it is in other live music scenes? i honestly do not think so

i guess at the end of the day, i wasnt trying to slag anyone or call them out, or come off as someone who is defensive or even angry at you for posting this, which i am not.

i thin mainly i misinterpreted your opinion on the matter, Kyle - and as a promoter in town, wanted to know if this type of behaviour being described is prevalent within the scene here, as i for one have not really seen stuff liek this take place in Victoria

I don't like getting fists to my face when i'm trying to watch a band i like because some dumbass is trying to prove to his friends he is cool. Maybe if these dudes were dancing like this because they enjoyed doing it i wouldn't like it as much but every time, literally every time i see someone punch a bunch of air or do a spin kick i immediately see his(or her) face scan around for their friends to look for an approving look of "atta boy timmy, you show that invisible monster what for".

also, i may also just like trolling you guys but seriously punch each other, not air. Or something.

Ill respond to this when i get home. Too long to deal with on my phone. I will say this: i in no way meant to sound as if i was trying to out-hard you. Looking back i can absolutely see where you got that and im sorry. I was way too unclear.

Andrew i am by no means saying we shouldnt combat misogyny in hardcore. I just think that when you start only complaining about it in the context of hardcore, it amounts to de facto acceptance of misogyny elsewhere. The OP even wrote that "pop punk guys may be sad misogynists, but at least i can get up front for a show." As if that somehow negates said misogyny. That frustrates the hell out of me.

I agree with most of the original post but for me its easier to not give a fuck because I don't like tough guy hardcore whereas the OP seems to enjoy it. too bad she made a few comments which have sufficed to essentially kill any credit her post contained.
