Dab is 100% dry venue from now on. Anyone with booze outside the venue will not be allowed access and anyone inside with booze will be kicked out. This has been the policy for shows I put on. I also rent out to other promoters who haven't been as strict. This is changing now.

Hollow, if someone sneaks in who isn't allowed I will remove him physically if he won't leave on his own or call the police. If people start shit with me then I will end the show and put some thought into not having them anymore. This is my photo studio / art space. I don't make a profit from my space. I put on music shows because I love music. I come from a great scene on the east coast and I want to help this scene as much as I can while I'm in this city. I unfortunately have the job of being the asshole most nights. That makes it so everyone else can have a worry free time and enjoy the music. I'm the one that pays for the space, books the bands, promotes the show, helps the bands carry in their gear, does their sound check, works the door, kicks people out who are causing problems, deals with the police, and stays up to clean up after everyone leaves.

People in this city complain about not having a space but then they turn around and shit on something good. I'm putting on shows in every genre. I was giving serious consideration to never having "loud" shows again because I'm not a fan of the genre and the noise complaints but after talking with Troy and others in this scene I've agreed to look into doing more loud shows here because VIHC seems to be serious and professional.

All I want is to be able to keep having shows here. I think it's a positive place and it feels great to facilitate that. If you enjoy the place then think of it as your own. I work a 62 hour a week job to afford to keep this thing going. The shows are starting to stress me out. Help me out with it. Respect it and teach others to respect it. I'm a friendly, approachable guy and open to everyone's input and advice.

andrew banned you/

i am confused..

these next two "loud" events are the last of its kind at dab anyways according to Andrew.
dudes got a mad grudge against me now for making out with a girl in his bathroom
as far as i can tell its just because hes friends with my ex girlfriend. at least it seems that way, considering there were many a person up in that loft not just me :/ but i was the one singled out

that place is gonna get slammed anyway they get complaints all the time and from what ive seen kids dont respect the neighbourhood or venue in any way. fuck em

Keith, I don't recall banning you. Did we have that discussion, or are you making things up? If your attitude is "fuck em" then yeah.. you're not welcome here. Yes, I was definitely pissed at you. It had nothing to do with me being friends with your ex girlfriend. I also flipped at her that night for being up there. We had over 150 ppl in our place that night. I took all my valuables and stashed them up in my bedroom. I'm a photographer and I have all my gear and music gear up in my bedroom. I put up a barrier so people wouldn't go in my room.

You went anyways and found yourself in my bedroom bathroom with a girl. My roommate found you there and told you to get out and that you weren't allowed up there. You wouldn't open the door for him. You finally went downstairs... then some time later I came up in my room and you're standing in it for the second time. Learn your lesson, be respectful. I'm inviting you into my house as a guest, providing you with a place to have a good time and see music in a way that is pretty rare in this town. My bedroom is my personal space. I shouldn't need to tell you more than once. Show me, my roommates and our house some respect and we won't have a problem and you can enjoy the shows.

hey andrew!

welcome to our little board.. where people talk more shit than they do in real life.

So be careful what you read.

I think i can say for all of us we are really grateful for what your space is doing for the arts community in general in here in Victoria.

Hopefully if we can get people to respect your venue and rules it can help alleviate costs of living there and your 62 hour work week.

andrew id love to talk to you about this more in an email or a more personal medium than an open messageboard to clear up the situation for sure. because from the only brief emails we had a few weeks ago, the only word ive heard has been passed down from different people and its just getting ridiculous (as you know)

Thanks for coming on the board Andrew.

First off, making DAB a dry venue is probably for the best, and I support that. I've been promoting shows for years now, and I get why you would want to do that. At the Endless Blockade show, my friends and I did our best to leave the venue premises to drink/do other stuff. I'm more than happy to tell people to do the same.

Second, I'm glad you are willing to look into doing more loud shows, and as someone who has been working with VIHC for God-knows-how-long I'm stoked to hear you feel you can work with us.

Third, I stand by what I said earlier. I don't like the idea of a friend of mine being banned for something as ridiculous as "making out in a bathroom". If it was for something more serious, I'd agree with you (I've personally told people I've caught smoking weed in a venue bathroom to never show their faces at a show again), but I was at that party on New Years, and EVERYONE was making out, especially in the bathroom. However, since this only involves me in a very circumspect way (I'm just a buddy) I would really ask that you take Keiths suggestion and talk to him via personal message/email. He's a reasonable dude, and you seem like a reasonable dude, and I'd like this to be worked out in a mature way.

Thanks again for putting on the show for Endless Blockades, it ruled and was way more fun than should be allowed. It wouldn't have happened if you hadn't allowed it, so thank you. Really.

Willa, I agree, no one should get shit for making out with a girl in a bathroom in a venue. Making out with girls in bathrooms is great. It crosses the line however when someone leaves the venue and goes into my private living space. Keith was in my bedroom on multiple occasions. My room was filled with everything of value in the house. The stairs up were blocked off and it was clearly out of bounds. If the barrier didnt make it obvious then the multiple occasions my roommates and I told Keith to get downstairs because he wasn't allowed in our personal space should have been hint enough. I was kind enough to use only words. There have been past shows where I've caught people in my room and physically dragged them down the 3 flights of stairs to the street. It's an invasion of my privacy to sneak into my room. I was also kind enough to return his bookbag he left in my room. I was tempted to throw it out my back door and send him an email saying come pick it up before someone else does. I think Keith made out pretty good for fucking up multiple times in one night and he's even being invited back. From now on anyone caught up there will be banned. I can't afford having my camera stolen. It's my livelihood. I provided 2 other "public" bathrooms for people to use. No one needs to be in my bedroom.

Ah, well that actually makes a lot more sense. I still would like to see you and Keith talk this out, as I want everyone to be able to come to shows. But if that's the case, then it really is between you two and I don't have much say in the matter. Sorry about that.

Just posting to say I 100% agree with Andrew and totally like his attitude.

While I liked drinking at Dab, that's probably best reserved for smaller events where you know most people or everyone. And I used to go to shows all the time while not drinking at all, so I'm sure other people can do that.

Andrew, we (Verisimilitude) loved playing at Dab and hanging out, I'm sure you have heard people saying it's the best new venue, so whatever you can do to keep that is awesome. And I really appreciated that Serina let me hang out in the house portion of the venue so I could meet with people and talk to them and stuff. And I REALLY appreciated the bathrooms, since I sort of ate hot wings the night before, and it was almost a medical emergency that I had to use one. Yeah. Also, Alex is one of the coolest guys I've met in a long time.

And we (the Troyler) are able to keep having our house shows because we don't budge with our rules. When people are noisy outside, we bring them in. To save our carpets, we make people take their shoes off. Before any band plays, we put up mattresses. It's like dealing with children sometimes but our rules are the reason we've only had one police/complaint to deal with, and that was because we let things get carried away on our outside deck. Anyway, my point is that YOU are the one who sets the rules, and you're doing an awesome job of adapting your situation to the circumstances to keep the venue around, and I love that. Keith is a good guy who deserves to be forgiven and you're nice for not banning him.

And one last thought. Troy, Willa, and most of us do really good jobs with the shows we put on. Hardcore shows have always been a sort of community-watched thing. If anything goes bad, like fights or vandalism or theft or whatever, it's the kind of thing we take responsibility for and deal with. But those things almost never happen, and it's not ever by us or people we know when it does happen. I'd say that the hardcore scene is much more responsible than a lot of other genres in Victoria based on my own experiences.

Which helps us keep it responsible. Kinda hard to be a dick to all of your friends.
